Never Underestimate the Power of Chocolate
True Confessions

I don't trust anyone who doesn't like chocolate.

Honestly, there has to be something seriously wrong with someone who can turn down that luscious brown gold. Anyone who says that they don't drool over that gloriously sweet, sinful confection is either lying or is very, very ill. And, if they're lying, then I can't trust them.

Desserts to Die for

Godiva raspberry filled truffles, Reese's peanut butter cups, peppermint patties, and of course, peanut butter pattie Girl Scout cookies are all laced with creamy goodness. Cheesecake with fudge drizzled on top, devil's food cake, and warm brownies with chocolate chips and frosting are to die for.

I gained five pounds just writing this edition!
It was my motivation and my inspiration. I had to do it.

Fool Me Once, Shame on Me.

I have even met a few adults who say that they don't like chocolate. Heck, they have even resisted the temptation in my presence. But, do I believe them? No, not really. I'm sure that right after they very graciously declined my invitation to commit a sugary sin that their unrequited lust overcame them and they went off to a closet and secretly indulged in their bittersweet passion.

There are a few kids who I have known for some time who tell me that they don't like chocolate. And, while I don't think that they are lying intentionally, I do think that their parents have brainwashed them into believing that there's something wrong or evil about chocolate.

*Sigh.*

I can't trust them either.

Break the Mold

About six years ago, to introduce myself to people, I always hand-delivered a special package. It included a collection of Lindt Gold truffles in the shape of golden eggs. With every package, I always included a letter about myself and my services.

Part of the note went something like this:

If you enjoyed these sweet milk chocolate eggs,
I want you to think for a moment about one of Aesop's Fables

The Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs.

If the chocolate was good, wouldn't it be better to have the goose?

Christine is available for discussions and chocolate tastings.
Give a call to check on her availability.

The note couldn't hold a candle to the truffles. But the good news is that some people (maybe it was that good old fashioned Catholic guilt?) felt a sense of obligation to read the note while they were nibbling the golden nuggets.

In response to a package I once delivered, I got a call one from Kronos. The director of marketing wanted to talk with me about my newsletter services. I could almost smell the chocolate on his breath through the phone! I think I heard the foil crinkling in the background. He told me that even though they had recently put a freeze on their marketing hiring, he just had to give me a call to find out about this mysterious "chocolate woman."

We chatted for a bit and laughed a lot. Turns out we both have a sweet spot for Lindt. He invited me in to meet with them and to say hello. It was a great visit and an even greater way to start a conversation.

We've stayed in touch for many years and every now and again I get a call for some "more chocolate." I love the fact that we've stayed in touch and have become friends.

The moral of the story is that if you start on a sweet note, then you will end on a high note.

Keep your newsletters full of the good stuff - and you will keep your customers happy.

Never underestimate the power of chocolate.

The rewards will be sweet.
