I'm a Peeping Tom

True Marketing Confessions

doorMy name is Christine and I'm a Peeping Tom.

I can't wait to be the passenger in the car when it's dark outside. I love to see oil paintings on the walls, Georgian mantles, and damask drapes. I want to see Christmas trees and holiday finery. A beautifully decorated door of a Boston brownstone begs me to saunter slowly along the sidewalk and check it out. I long to see inside other people's houses. I want to catch a glimpse of the life and the decorations beyond the windows. I can't help letting out the Peeping Tom that's hiding inside of me!

I think it would be cool to take this one-step further, literally. I want to be welcomed in to look around. (OK, now that I've told you this, I'm probably the last person that you would allow in your house!) But here's the thing. I've always held onto a dream that one day each year would be "Open House Day." Every house, in every town, all over the world would open its doors and welcome visitors and friends and me.

During that "Open House Day," I imagine everyone digging deeper into the lives of their neighbors and friends. I envision amazing conversations and connections. People will share their stories and find similarities.

We often overlook what's right next door.

Think about a house that you pass every day on your way to work, school, or the grocery store.

  • If you went inside, what would you ask them?
  • What have you always wanted to know about them?
  • What would happen if you got to know them better?
  • How would your life be different?

Marketing is not just about what you put out there. It's not just the language you use to tell people about what you do. It has everything to do with

  • The questions you ask
  • How you ask them, and
  • What you do with the answers.

It has everything to do with the connections you make and how you value those relationships.

Life can be so cool if you look beyond the front door.

Here's how you can explore what's inside your customer's home:

  • Use some of the very same questions above that you'd ask a neighbor you don't know
  • What have you always been curious about?
  • What have you always wanted to know about them?
  • Ask good questions, dig deeper.
  • Really get to know your customers.

It's amazing what you'll discover. Don't just stay on the curb. Knock on the door. Go inside.
