It was a great chance to just kick back and gab. I was chatting with a friend when I overheard bits and pieces of what sounded like a really funny story. In a small group next to me, an energetic, animated woman was using her hands to tell a story. The other women were laughing and loving it. Kimberly Bee of Kimberly Bee Designs, was holding court telling everyone about her big problem—that all kids, even her own perfect offspring, were born with the whining gene. But not to fret, she had the perfect solution. They all waited with baited breath. No whining. No dining. Short. Sweet. Simple. She let everyone know that she was now the commander-in-chief
in her kitchen. Her kids would be given good dinner choices —but
whining was not one of them. If, in fact, they whined about the food on
their plate, they knew the rule—they would have to leave the table
until the family was finished and then, and only then, could they
return to finish their meal. No ifs, ands, or buts! “It was amazing!” she said. “My kids
whined once, I told them to leave the table and they never did it
again!” The other listeners were in awe. No Whining. No Dining. It
sounded so simple – almost too good to be true. They all chimed
in. They agreed. They had to try this! I poked my head into the
conversation circle and Kimberly smiled and said, “And this is
Christine Pinney. She’s the one who told me about this fabulous idea.
She writes stuff like this in her newsletter.” I was thrilled that the advice (a) actually worked for
someone else and, that
(b) it was so good that
she simply had to share it. A good story is infectious,
like a smile. Mary Tyler Moore turned the
world on with her smile, and likewise industry experts talk about how
effective viral marketing can be. A
good story can spread like
wildfire. o Tell
stories that people want to tell
and retell.
o
Strike a cord with your readers. Connect with them.
o Help
your readers. Give them information that they
can use and reuse.
Give them feel good stories that can make them look and feel good. It’s good to give and it’s good to get. |
